ARTIST STATEMENT

Using parody and queer archive activism, my work lies at the intersection of food culture, racialized labor, and identity. Clashing cultural references, raising awareness, and connecting the personal to the political are all tactics within my work. I unravel hidden social dynamics and critique power by creating my own fictional systems. I use food culture to interrogate consumption methods while drawing on queer feminist archive activism to insert myself into a patriarchal context that did not previously historicize my humanity or make spaces for me. My work spans new media, performance art, sculpture, and installation.

		<description>Karmic II
 @ 2021 New Media Gallery Residency, Jack Straw Cultural Center ︎Seattle, WA

&#60;img width="6720" height="4480" width_o="6720" height_o="4480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d8c08922a40970a9eabc8e749549eeb35623a04682a1eaf347f6356a6d06556f/karmic_ii_gallery_view_1.jpg" data-mid="117104107" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d8c08922a40970a9eabc8e749549eeb35623a04682a1eaf347f6356a6d06556f/karmic_ii_gallery_view_1.jpg" /&#62;

Karmic II takes many of the horrors of 2020 and 2021 and blends them into an audiovisual installation meant to make us reconsider and challenge our own psychological perceptions of the world.

Featured is the video work, Horror &#38;amp; Its Uni Verse, which employs horror conventions and glitch with audio and video projections to critique online monetization and capitalism from the perspective of a scene that is incredibly reminiscent of the COVID-19 era.

&#60;img width="6720" height="4480" width_o="6720" height_o="4480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5ee2e0ad0b6ace1a9ee9c0aaa81ec01867b0786d8cc8482440b71763ebc2ca2e/karmic_ii_mag_050.jpg" data-mid="117104148" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5ee2e0ad0b6ace1a9ee9c0aaa81ec01867b0786d8cc8482440b71763ebc2ca2e/karmic_ii_mag_050.jpg" /&#62;

Inspired by Southeast Asian horror movies and the ‘90s TV drama of the ghost PhiKrasue, the artist investigates what exactly creates “a monster,” and what psychological and social control they enforce through sonic elements and performance. Karmic II is a continuation of a New Media Fellowship project and immersive installation, Karmic I, exhibited at OpenSignal in 2019, in Portland, OR.

Fok Fok Industries is a multi-genre project reappropriating the appropriative award-winning, white-owned, Thai restaurant franchise Pok Pok. Fok Fok Industries uses digital media, performance art, and original fake merchandise to address capitalist consumption, the fantasy of the cultural “Other,” and the neocolonial gaze disguised as multiculturalism.

These sculptural works represent a physical installation related to Fok Fok Industries. Hand-blown, two-tone glass cups with glass-cast chicken wings and drumsticks ornament the table of the fictional Fok Fok restaurant, highlighting the gastronomic exploitation of Asian cultures through these aestheticized and fragile pieces.

Fok Fok Industries is a multidisciplinary project utilizing copycat branding and intellectual property loopholes as a Trojan horse to examine capital, Orientalization, and gastronomic exploitation in response to the white-owned Thai restaurant franchise Pok Pok. It incorporates art interventions and worldmaking performances in the style of faux reality TV shows, using humor to interrogate the commodification of cultural artifacts.

Through speculative fiction, it reveals uncomfortable systemic truths after luring viewers into a surreal world.

“The firestorm apocalypse is in full swing, and you’ve just stumbled upon your new safe haven. You’re hungry, tired, and overwhelmed with the state of the world. On the table, there’s a curated plate of warm, aromatic sticky rice and crispy blue fried chicken. You can’t believe what you’re about to see. Indulge in your new favorite 8-bit adventure.”

The Fok Fok retro soundtrack is inspired by 60s-80s Thai pop-funk and retro grooves. It uses distorted thunder, rain, and various instruments to capture the essence of the Vitamin D-deficient Pacific Northwest and pop songs experienced in Thai restaurants.

	“GLEAN is a juried art program that taps into the creativity of artists to inspire people to think about their consumption habits, the waste they generate, and the resources they throw away. In light of the global crisis, the 2020 GLEAN program shifted to be adaptive to the times and further prioritizing the safety of our artists.”
The sculptures were created with imported Asian food products to think about the words imported / deported. Who or what is allowed to stay? Who or what has value?

Karmic I is a four-part multimedia project that materializes as texts, lesson plans for youth, community events and a series of videos about Thai ghosts in media.

The artist opens up about a huge influence in her life: a 90’s Thai ghost soap opera TV show that her grandmother puts on in the morning to wake her up for school. The show’s storyline features a staple of Southeast Asian ghost folklore, phi Krasue, a vampiric cannibalistic floating head of a woman with hanging organs, terrifying a rural village. Too young to understand, yet affected anyway, the artist traces her steps to investigate what exactly creates “a monster,” and what psychological structures and social control they enforce.

This project was supported by the 2018 New Media Fellowship at Open Signal in Portland, OR.&#38;nbsp;

“The Three Stupas”

As an artist-in-residence at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in 2019, Cat created&#38;nbsp;The Three Stupas for “The United” exhibition, which aims to center the topic of immigration. It was curated by Johanna Lasner and opened on October 2nd, 2020.

Press Release:

Curated by Johanna Lasner, “The United” examines the incredibly complicated topic of immigration in a time when immigration systems are in crisis — affecting many of us closely, as members of diverse communities, as descendants of immigrants, or as immigrants ourselves. The exhibition with artwork from 12 artists from Belgium, Northern Ireland, Russia and the US explores the possibilities for proactive engagement with immigration issues, reconfiguring the status and function of art from passivity to active agency.
As part of “The United” exhibition, Cat was part of a panel on “Hanging on Every Word: Listening and Learning on Immigration Art” at Intersect Chicago (formerly S.O.F.A.– The Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design fair) on November 6, 2020.

Thai ceramics from the 15-17th century were re-interpreted and made with glass, integrating the Stupa which is an architectural element found in temples and pagodas.
